Hello, everyone. I'm Joshua Clement. and today I'm going to talk to you about the proper way to install a water heater. If you don't hook up a water heater properly, you can actually have your cold water pumping into the spout for the hot water to come out of. And that'll actually compromise your system a little bit. To where when you turn on your hot water, you're just going to get a bunch of cold water coming out. Because you hooked it up to the wrong spout. The first step is to go ahead and put in a shut off valve on your cold line coming in. That way, you don't have to shut down the entire house water to maintenance your water heater. All you have to do, is just go right up here and shut off the water of your cold line, only to your water heater. From there, you have two nipples coming out, one for your cold and one for your hot. You want to make sure that you put piping thread or pipe putty around here. That way, it seals it and you don't have any leaks coming out of those threads. Make sure that all your joints are really well sealed, whether you're using solder and copper, Pex and crimping or even CPVC and glue. Everything needs to be sealed properly, so that way there's no leaks. Then, of course, you have your hot water coming out, which will go to your faucets and your bathtubs, your sinks, your dishwasher, places like that. Next, we're going to talk about the pop off. A lot of people ignore the pop off and don't drain it properly. What this is here for, is if there's too much pressure built up on the inside of the water heater. This right here, will actually pop and allow the water to escape. So that way, it's not a bomb sitting there, waiting to explode under a high amount of pressure. Another thing it does, is if you build up too much heat in the water heater, this actually is controlled by a temperature as well and will pop off. So that way, again you're not creating a bomb. You want to make sure that you have this connected to a pipe and put into a drain. That way, if it ever does pop off, you're draining it away from any drywall or basement areas that could cause mold. And the final step to installing your water heater, is electric. You don't want to install the electric first and then, be messing with all the pipes and the water. Just in case, somebody goes behind and flips that breaker on. On a water heater, you have a 220, which. there's a 110 line and a 110 line. On your water heater, you have the same thing. One will hook up to this one, one will hook up this one. Doesn't really matter which one you hook up to the other, because they're both hot wires and they're rated for a 110. So, here we'll take the blacks and out them together, using just a standard wire nut. Put it on there and tighten it down. After we tighten we down, I'm going to go ahead and give it a little pull, just to make sure that both wires are securely fastened. Next, we'll go ahead and hook up the other one. Then, we have a ground. A ground is a solid copper wire that comes out of your sleeve and you hook it up to what's called a ground screw. The ground screws are usually green in color. Make sure that you get that wrapped around there. After that's done, I'll take the wires and tuck them back into the little cavity. And then, we'll put our cover plates on and tighten these screws down. Knowing how to hook up a water heater properly will save you a lot of time and money from calling a plumber. And trying to fiddle around, not knowing how exactly everything hooks together. Thank you all for watching, and good luck with this project.
